The Shakespeare Theatre Company welcomes teachers and students to experience the excitement of live performance through SHAKESPEARIENCE, our Student Matinee and Family Series. SHAKESPEARIENCE is designed to increase access to classic theatre and the theatrical process for students and teachers in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. The program includes subsidized reduced-price tickets, preparatory materials and in-school workshops. Supplemental materials are provided free of charge to all participants.

This season we are thrilled to offer students in grades eight through twelve the opportunity to see two of Shakespeare’s plays, All’s Well that Ends Well and Cymbeline as well as the first musical to grace the Sidney Harman Hall stage, Candide based on Voltaire’s satire with a brilliant score from the incomparable Leonard Bernstein.

  • Reduced-price tickets
  • A mandatory in-school pre-performance workshop with a Shakespeare Theatre Company teaching artist to help prepare students for the performance
  • A post-performance talk-back with the actors immediately following the matinee
  • An optional post-performance in-school workshop

What people are saying about SHAKESPEARIENCE:

“The Shakespeare Theatre’s educational programs have opened up a new world for our students, which allows them to work creatively as a group, build their self-confidence and use theatre to strengthen their sense of community.  This is a very important experience for young people looking to find their way in a new culture.  We believe that their participating in this program will give them a life-long appreciation for literature and performing arts.  The students in “Theatre Without Borders” are extremely proud of their participation in SHAKESPEARIENCE and look forward to collaborating with the Shakespeare Theatre in the future”

“The program was so well though out;  from the literature you sent for the students, to the artist visit, to the performance itself and then the workshop the students participated in after the show-everything was purposeful and creative.  Capital City Public Charter School is a Title 1 school and most of our students would not have been able to afford to go to see As You Like It.  I really appreciated the financial help and the user-friendly application process.  My students are still talking about their visit.  For some of them, this was the first time they had been to a professional theatre and for all of them it was the first time they had the opportunity to meet and question the actors after the show.  I want to thank you for the on-going communication with your office; the program is so well organized and helpful and all my questions were always answered so quickly.  Thank you again for a wonderful experience and I hope to have future classes participate again!
